A local councillor has praised the wild flowers that have been allowed to grow at Kenilworth Cemetery.

The cemetery is maintained by Warwick District Council, and in some areas the grass has deliberately been allowed to grow in order to promote biodiversity.

A report produced by Cllr Richard Dickson for Kenilworth Town Council said that no major problems had been reported to WDC regarding the Oaks Road cemetery.

The report stated that the district council continued to keep the site in good condition, adding: "At this time of year the grass is growing rapidly, but the site has been kept tidy by WDC's contractors as agreed.

"This includes allowing certain parts of the cemetery to 'wild' as a meadow thus improving the biodiversity of the area."

Cllr James Kennedy, who has pushed KTC's own wild meadow project, said he was pleased with the way it had been achieved at the Oaks Road cemetery.

"I am delighted to see that, obviously we have been talking about biodiversity and wild flower growing around Jubilee House, that the cemetery has got ahead of us and there is an area for wildlife and wild flowers," he said at last week's finance and general services committee meeting.

Cllr Dickson's report also said that new graves were being dug on the western side of the cemetery.

Adding: "It had been proposed, as part of the creation of South Warwickshire District Council, that bereavement services would operate across both Warwick and Stratford districts, although Stratford district does not have any of its own cemeteries.

"The breakdown of the merger process between the two governing administrations means that Warwick District Council will continue to operate bereavement services in Kenilworth under the management of Pam Chilvers, reporting to head of assets Steve Partner.

"Cllr Jan Matecki is the portfolio member with cabinet member responsibility."
