Council wants to make Kenilworth town centre more accessible to people with disabilities
Councillors are putting together a plan to make Kenilworth's town centre more accessible to people with disabilities.
Kenilworth Town Council has launched a new task and finish group aimed at making roads, pavements and public buildings easier to access for people with all sorts of disabilities.
Speaking at last week's meeting, Cllr Zoe Leventhal proposed the next step would be for councillors to do a full sweep of the town centre, to see where improvements are most needed.
"Kenilworth Town Council is working to make the town centre accessible and a safe and friendly place," she said.
"What we would like to do next is start a task and finish group to take the task forward including an audit to do a proper assessment as to where in Kenilworth from a road and public building perspective is accessible and where it is not."
Councillors backed the next steps and signed off on a report which said the scheme had been launched on the back of councillors' views and the "views of the residents we have engaged with to date, with lived experience of disability as well as expertise in this area".
"The basis of the scoping exercise was [to] look into ways in which we could improve the accessibility of Kenilworth for people with all kinds of disabilities," the report said.
"Despite the many positives we have identified, we agreed there is a clear need for this work, both for residents and for visitors – whether in terms of the built environment (i.e. roads, pavements, buildings, open spaces), and in terms of information, knowledge and training (regarding e.g. events, planning decisions and other decision making)."
The task and finish group will bring back plans for next steps to a future council meeting.
