Warwick District Council is set to write to MPs in a bid to try and change licensing rules which leave its hands tied in supporting local pubs.

The local authority released a statement last week welcoming the government's move to allow all pubs to stay open until 5am today to show the England vs Mexico World Cup match.

The switch came after a number of local venues found they would otherwise not have been allowed to stay open due to their licence limitations.

Some pubs had applied for a temporary event notice (TEN) to stay open - but they had to do so before it was confirmed when England would play their round of 16 fixture.

For those who waited until the fixtures were confirmed, it was too late as TEN applications must be submitted five full days before the date they are needed.

WDC says this rule needs to be changed.

"Warwick District Council is delighted to see that the government has implemented emergency legislation to ensure that pubs can open for the England vs Mexico match," the statement said.

"This will allow communities to come together and support both the national team and their local hospitality businesses.

"The council has been in communication with local MPs and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) about this issue, as the current legislation does not allow the council any flexibility in accepting a Temporary Event Notice outside of the prescribed notice requirements.

"The council will be writing to its local MPs next week to seek their support for changes to the Licensing Act 2003 that would give councils limited discretion to support local businesses during major national events, while maintaining local safeguards."
