Kenilworth pub will now be able to show England game after rule change
By James Smith 3rd Jul 2026
A Kenilworth pub - which previously criticised the "disapointing" news that red tape would stop it from showing England's next game - will now be able to show the Three Lions' next fixture.
The Lion on Warwick Road is set to stay open on Monday morning (July 6) as England take on Mexico in their round of 16 fixture.
Originally the town centre pub had applied for a temporary event notice for the game, but was unable to get one from Warwick District Council having missed the deadline for applying by waiting to see if England would actually make it to that stage of the World Cup.
But now Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer has announced all pubs will be allowed to stay open until 5am show the fixture.
The fixture at the Azteca Stadium kicks off at 1am BST and will not finish until at least 3am or possibly later should the game go all the way to penalties.
"Football might be coming home but we're making sure fans don't have to," Sir Kier said.
The Lion said: "Great news - we're finally able to show the match!
"Join us at The Lion, Kenilworth for England vs Mexico, live Monday at 1:00am.
"We'll have it on all nine TVs, so come down, grab a pint, and cheer the boys on together.
"Come on England!"
