The Kenilworth Lido Campaign said it was "staggered" by the community's support as members battled the elements to demonstrate against the demolition of the town's outdoor pool.

Campaigners faced the rain, sleet, winds and snow on Friday and Saturday during the 'Lights Out for Kenilworth Lido' vigil, with some members camping overnight.

Hundreds of local people dropped by to support the campaigners who were outside the Abbey Fields lido from 6am on Friday morning (November 26) until midday Saturday.

"We were staggered by the level of support from local people, including youngsters, who dropped by throughout the vigil - much greater than we could have hoped for given the circumstances," a group spokesperson said.

"We were also overwhelmed by the generosity of people who provided welcome supplies of hot food, hot flasks and cakes during the vigil.

"We heard many wonderful stories about people's experiences in the outdoor pool and the message that constantly and clearly came through was that it must not be allowed to go."

As well as hearing stories from residents, the vigil also saw a 'memory wall' created to bring the 125-year history of outdoor swimming in Kenilworth together.

One passer-by even provided footage of a gala at the outdoor pool filmed in 1947 which has now been shared widely on local social media.

The lido group has continued to protest against Warwick District Council's decision to demolish and rebuild the town's swimming facilities, and now has nearly 3,000 signatures on a petition to keep the outdoor pool open. The spokesperson added: "The group is currently compiling a report of all the information gathered at the vigil which will be passed to Warwick District Council to highlight the level of public support for the retention of the only outdoor pool in Warwickshire alongside the indoor pool." Paralympic gold medallist Melanie Barratt was also in attendance at the vigil, having recently got involved with the campaign. She said: "Demolishing the lido would be an absolute tragedy. I was really disappointed to find out they are actually going to get rid of the only safe outdoor swimming facility in Warwickshire. "The lido was an important facility for disabled people as other options for outdoor swimming locally were lakes and rivers which are very difficult, if not impossible to get to." The campaign group is also planning to mark the scheduled closing of the Abbey Fields complex on 18 December.
