Dates announced for closures of Kenilworth swimming pool and Castle Farm Recreation Centre ahead of demolition

By James Smith 12th Nov 2021

The closing dates for Abbey Fields Swimming Pool and Castle Farm Recreation Centre have been announced today by Warwick District Council.

Both sports facilities are due to be demolished and rebuilt in the next 18 months by the council.

Castle Farm Recreation Centre is due to close on Sunday 12 December, followed by Abbey Fields Swimming Pool on Saturday 18 December.

Works are then due to start in early 2022.

During the period when the facilities are closed, Everyone Active will be offering members and customers access to its alternative leisure centres across the district.

However, WDC has promised to find a more 'innovative' long term solution for exercise facilities in Kenilworth during the redevelopment period.

WDC's portfolio holder for culture, tourism and leisure Cllr Liam Bartlett said: "We're very pleased to be progressing to the next stage of our plans to offer the town of Kenilworth and the wider district the very best sports and leisure facilities.

"It's our intention to minimise disruption to current users during the redevelopment and allow them to continue their regular activities locally where possible.

"We are therefore happy that the arrangements Everyone Active have put in place will fulfil the interim need. There will be further announcements soon about our programme to encourage local outdoor sports during the closure period."

The Kenilworth Lido Campaign Group has organised a public meeting this weekend to discuss the future of outdoor swimming in the town, and the council's commitment to reaching carbon net-zero by 2030.

Cllr Colin Quinney also released a statement this week calling on WDC to rethink its designs for the new sports facilities.
