A councillor has taken up the mantle of trying to improve safety at Kenilworth Railway Station after an elderly lady was trapped in a lift there earlier this year.

Val Baker, 84, got trapped in the lift in April and described the whole experience as "very distressing".

The situation was made worse by the fact the emergency phone in the lift was broken. Thankfully Mrs Baker had a mobile phone on her, meaning she could phone the fire brigade to get her out.

Vandalism to the lift and the CCTV cameras was also reported.

Speaking at last week's Kenilworth Town Council meeting, Cllr Richard Dickson said he is working with operator West Midlands Railway (WMR) to avoid the situation being repeated

"I had a meeting with West Midlands Railway's representative and somebody from county council and a local resident who got stuck in a lift back in April," he told members.

"We discussed the lift at the unmanned station and what can be done to improve it with signage and making sure Network Rail don't delete all the CCTV footage within the space of 20 days before anyone has had the chance to look at it, which is what they have been doing."

He continued: "It is not a pleasant experience for anybody if they get stuck in that lift.

"The problem in the case in April was that the emergency phone did not appear to be working either inside.

"It was a potentially really serious issue.

"We have engaged with the member of parliament on that as well."

In May, WMR said there was no "clear cause" for the lift stopping with the lady inside it.

The operator said the issue was resolved on the day and it is "not aware of any further issues".
