Arson at Kenilworth's Tesco could be one of a number of incidents from organised group
A fire at Kenilworth's Tesco last month could be part of a series of incidents around the region - according to a report presented to Kenilworth Town Council.
The Leyes Lane shop remains closed following the arson attack on September 30, during which thieves attempted to break into the outside ATM.
Having already reportedly threatened members of the public, the offender then made off from the scene without successfully gaining access to the cash machine.
And while investigations continue, a report from Kenilworth's safer neighbourhood team to the town council said the incident could be part of a wider organised crime group.
"The burglary at Tesco's on Leyes Lane was reported largely in the area, and many comments made," the report said.
"Police were on scene within six minutes of the call coming in, the target was a cashpoint machine, and the fire was a result from the sparks from the angle grinder being used.
"This is being investigated by CID officers and regional crime squads, as it is thought that an organised group are committing these offences around the Midlands.
"Suspects tend to target small supermarkets/shops which have cash machines, usually in rural locations.
"Patrols have been increased in these locations by not only local police but also traffic and firearms officers."
Warwickshire Police also confirmed to Nub News that no arrests have been made yet.
The Tesco Express store has been boarded up since and is not expected to reopen for several months, Kenilworth Nub News understands.
The fire came just weeks after the Tesco store had received a major refurbishment.
The fire also caused the neighbouring store - The Bakers Dozen - to close temporarily with smoke damaging much of its stock.
