Warwick Road could be closed for community picnic as part of jubilee celebrations

A huge community picnic could be held on Warwick Road to celebrate the Queen's platinum jubilee this June.

Running between events in Warwick and Leamington Spa over the jubilee weekend, the picnic would take place on Friday, June 3.

Whilst the district council had suggested Abbey Fields for the event - much to the amusement of Kenilworth Town Councillors - it was felt closing the road would make a better venue.

"The obvious site to do this, as Warwick District Council suggest, is Abbey Fields," said Cllr Richard Dickson at last night's finance and general services committee meeting.

"Although the redevelopment is late starting, by then it could be a demolition site and therefore not an ideal place to be attracting residents and visitors to.

"Especially if access to the bridges is closed off."

Whilst there are no firm plans in place yet, the council has formed a working group and approved a £5,000 budget for the town's jubilee celebrations.

Councillors said the event could bring together the community and give the chance for local organisations and groups to get involved.

"I hope that businesses on Warwick Road and in the area would welcome a mass event of some sort," added Cllr James Kennedy.

"It would also be great to see Talisman Square involved as they have had great success in hosting a couple of events recently."

With Abbey Fields deemed unsuitable, councillors did also consider other green spaces in the town, such as behind the castle.

Cllr John Dearing said the site was very appropriate given its historical significance.

"The meadow behind the castle was used for festivals in the town in the 1930s," he said.

"And it would be nice to use that, as it is a green space."
