A new memorial bench will be unveiled in Abbey Fields as part of the centenary celebrations of the Kenilworth war memorial.

The bench will be put into place during a small service at the memorial on Saturday, February 26 – 100 years after the it was first dedicated by Lord Lieutenant Francis Leigh.

Revered Stella Bailey will be joined by the mayor, MP, Warwickshire RBL chairman and the current Lord Lieutenant at the 11am service.

Unlike Remembrance Sunday there will be no parade and the roads will not be closed.

"With the memorial opened a hundred years ago we really wanted to mark the occasion," said chairman of Kenilworth RBL Cllr George Illingworth.

"There are of course a lot of local families who have names on the memorial, so this is very important.

"We will also be unveiling a memorial bench on the day which has been paid for by the people of Kenilworth."

The bench has been paid for by donations from residents and local organisations – separate to the "record-breaking" £30,000 raised by the poppy appeal last November.

During the service more wreaths will also be laid at the memorial, to add to those still in place from November.

And a painting of the castle surrounded by poppies will also be presented to Kenilworth Town Council.

"We also have a presentation from the British Legion to Kenilworth Town Council to thank them for their support of Remembrance," added Cllr Illingworth.
