Town council objects to planning application for 620 houses and primary school in Kenilworth

By James Smith 6th Dec 2021

Kenilworth Town Council has objected to a detailed application for 620 new houses and a primary school behind the Woodside Hotel.

Town councillors said the number of objections already raised by other authorities meant they couldn't approve the plans.

And they said action needed to be taken against the plans which do not fully match Warwick District Council's climate emergency action plan.

A note from Cllr Rob Barry said: "I believe that our current and future residents will rightly think we have failed under the climate emergency if we feel we have to play by planning rules and do not make a stand on this issue."

WDC announced in September that it would be investing £60 million over eight years on this project.

The council will receive 248 affordable homes built to zero carbon standards.

But councillors felt the plans, which already have outline planning approval, did not go far enough.

Cllr John Dearing said: "Given that WDC is involved we might expect the houses to be built to higher environmental standards.

"Particularly given WDC's climate action plans to be carbon zero by 2030 this really makes gas boilers obsolete and therefore really shouldn't be installed in new houses, which is what has been proposed to at least half of the houses in this application."

He added: "At the very least we need some reassurances that the developers will be creating a housing development that is based around active travel."

Environmental Health and National Highways have also objected to the application, with Stagecoach raising concerns about bus access to the new estate.

Cllr Kate Dickson said: "All these statutory consultees are providing objections I can't see that these plans are going to go forward without some amendments.

"So maybe we should put in a holding objection, recognising that these concerns have been raised."

Cllr Alix Dearing added: "Its is a matter of amazement to me that these statutory bodies are providing comments and objections and that it has gone this far."
