HS2 reveals 'green tunnel' plans for Burton Green

By James Smith   17th Feb 2022

HS2 has revealed new plans to mask the 400-metre tunnel at Burton Green with tree planting.

Contractors Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) said greenery, new footpaths and connections to local woods had all been designed after feedback from local residents.

They said the new design would help the tunnel "integrate seamlessly with the existing landscape".

Tree planting is also planned along the realigned Kenilworth Greenway to shield it from view of the railway.

And an emergency access building for the tunnel will also have a green roof to match it "with the surrounding landscape".

"Our designs show how we will 'drape' the landscape over the tunnel by placing soil to conceal the tunnel roof to support new native woodland planting, reconnected wildlife corridors and new public footpaths," said Steve Fancourt, HS2's senior landscape design manager.

"New ecological features such as wildflower species found locally, and bat and bird boxes will create bigger and better wildlife habitats."
