A pre-match lunch at Syston set the tone for a great home-club day as Kenilworth visited Syston.

Kenilworth's continued struggles in the Regional One Midlands League saw no respite this weekend, with the home side scoring a sequence of tries through sweeping moves and polished finishing.

Kenilworth showed real spirit, grit and determination to stay in the contest and scored two well taken tries to show what they are capable of when they keep possession and get some continuity.

After five minutes of play Syston scored through their full back J. Green and this was unconverted. This was quickly followed up by a Syston break away try by the right winger, L. Williams, again unconverted.

Kenilworth showed in both the lineout and scrum they could hold their own, in the rucks, the ball was being moved quickly by Derby to their speedy wingers.

The major problem was the Kenilworth spent a lot of time defending and this eventually took its toll.

This meant that Syston scored through hooker A. Knight off a variable lineout, and a further five tries came from Derby moving the ball wide as much as possible on the open turf. Four of these were converted.

The score at half time was 53-0.

In the second half, the match went into nip and tuck mode and Kenilworth played with fluidity at times when they managed to retain the ball. They kept conceding tries, not through lack of effort, but through the quality of the opposition.

At last, in the 61st minute Kenilworth scored a well taken try through Jack McAdam who polished off a fine move, this was converted by Robbie Holden.

Syston followed up with a plethora of tries as the game opened up with conversions going over too. Eventually, the pendulum swung again back to Kenilworth and in the 81st minute Kenilworth followed up with a well worked try by Harry Bowser who scored in the left- hand corner.

The score at the finish was 100 points to 12. This in reality was the gap between the two teams. However, it was a much better performance from the Kenilworth squad and they did show guts and determination.

Syston have now been promoted into the National Leagues and congratulations to them on a fantastic season and accomplishment.

The President and the Committee at Syston have done a great job getting them this far.

Kenilworth continue to hang on in there and the next men's 1st XV fixture is Nuneaton at home next Saturday at 3.00pm.
