Kenilworth men travelled to Silhillians to play on a day that was sunny and actually quite pleasant after the deluge of rain from the previous weeks.

This Valentine's Day fixture saw an open game with not a lot of romance. The pitch was surprisingly good as it appeared to be on Solihull sand and gravel rather than Warwickshire clay.

Again, Kenilworth fielded a young side under skipper Ted Bromwich, with eleven former mini and juniors in the squad. With the evergreen Gaz Renowden, Robbie Holden, Sam Southall and Bobby Thompson in the squad, it gave Kenilworth some much needed experience.

In the opening six minutes Silhillians scored first through their pacey left winger Louis Roach after good continuity play and poor Kenilworth defence. The score was unconverted. The game then went into a sort of stalemate/ neutral phase for about 12 minutes and this was broken by continued concerted Kenilworth pressure.

This pressure was followed by a typical Bobby Thompson try under the sticks and converted by full back Mark O'Connor. This made the score 5-7.

Kenilworth were at this stage able to make effective territory but unable to finish moves off. They often shot themselves in the foot with either simple unforced errors or poor handling.

It was quite frustrating if as a Kenilworth supporter you witnessed these elementary mistakes. This included soft penalties, and as a consequence, Silhillians scored the next try through a forward drive off a lineout and this was converted by Ben Stewart.

Kenilworth immediately conceded another try from the ensuing play as Silhillians played the ball back from deep in their own half. The fluid play was finished again by the left winger Louis Roach and was converted by Ben Stewart. This made the score 19-7.

With the turnaround after half time, Silhillians within the first five minutes, scored again through an effective forward drive off another lineout opportunity. This try was scored by No 8 Jack Kalewski and converted by Ben Stewart. The latest score was now 26 -7.

The writing was on the wall for Kenilworth who looked like they were slightly overwhelmed and were under playing to their ability. Their body language was not wholly positive, this was mixed with frustration and it showed.

It got even stickier for them and more entrenched when Silhillians scored another try through their outside centre Callum Robertson to make the score 31-7. Again, on 57 minutes Silhillians scored through their left winger Louis Roach followed by a conversion by Ben Stewart. 38-7.

However, these scores were the apparent catalyst to Kenilworth coming out of the doldrums. Mercifully, they scored next through the all-round play of back row Max Brain. He secured a lineout about 40 metres out and managed to extricate himself into a long driving run from the line and dived over for the score.

A great individual try and this was the score that Kenilworth really needed to get back into the game. On 65 minutes Vice Captain Tommy Hunter scored again wide out for Kenilworth after being put into space by Bobby Thompson. Tommy Hunter showed his speed and finishing ability. The try was unconverted.

At this stage in the game both Kenilworth and Silhillians had received yellow cards for various infringements from excellent Warwickshire referee Martin Nailor. He was fair to both sides and diligent in his attention to detail.

The yellow cards opened up the game and Kenilworth scored another try on the 80th minute through the persistence and resilience of Bobby Thompson. Bobby scored to give Kenilworth a bonus point from the match and the 38-22 scoreline.

Things are getting close at the bottom half of the table and all teams are playing to gain points. All to play for.
