A trip to Bridgnorth and their brand-new club house (on stilts) did not disappoint.
A well-attended vice-presidents pre match lunch followed by good weather for rugby. We saw a feast of running rugby from Bridgnorth and another spirited performance from Kenilworth Men's first XV.
The game itself was open and both teams wanted to play fast rugby in the right areas of the field. Kenilworth's sticking points were putting a huge amount of time and effort in defence and a limited amount of attacking opportunities.
This eventually took its toll. Defending heroically for long periods of time and again being physically pushed to the limit.
This is the story of their season.
The game itself was open and exciting. Both teams wanting to play with ball in hand in the right areas of the field. Bridgnorth opened the scoring through comprehensive play and great execution.
There followed some good spells of defence from Kenilworth and snippets of attack which yielded no points at this stage. Kenilworth defended with good shape and aggressive line speed but could not match Bridgnorth's physicality and power.
Consequently, Bridgnorth scored four more tries before half time. Kenilworth's spirit and will to give their all remained throughout.
Kenilworth's men showed resilience and determination even with limited attacking ball.
Therefore, from a line out twenty metres out from the Bridgnorth line, they took a well taken try from Kenilworth's man of the match, Iestyn Thomas, converted by Jamie Brownleader.
The Kenilworth forwards were doing an effective job as possible. The lineout was functioning quite well with the scrum holding its own. The backs showed moments of fluidity and promise. Continuity was the key.
In the second half, Bridgnorth were moving the ball wide at every opportunity, they butchered several chances and Kenilworth also showed that with ball in hand they too could force Bridgnorth to defend for periods of time.
Kenilworth had a few opportunities to score themselves, they spent 20 minutes of the second half with 14 players on the pitch due to a lot of injuries.
This opened up the flood gates and this saw Bridgnorth score more tries most of which were converted.
The score at the finish was 84 points to seven. This just about reflected the gap between the two teams. Kenilworth are fielding very young sides at the moment, and the experience gained will hopefully come to fruition in the long term.
However, it was a much better performance from the young Kenilworth squad.
Outstanding performances came from the two players, No8 Morgan Fox and inside centre Iestyn Thomas.
The next men's 1st XV match is at home to Burton on Saturday 8 February, with a 2.15 kick off.
