Nuneaton 49 Kenilworth 7

Kenilworth travelled to Liberty Way with hopes of kickstarting a revival but ultimately Nuneaton's scrum power and pacey back three proved the difference in a game where Kenilworth may feel they could have come away with more.

Good early defence kept Nuns at bay but on 10 minutes a miscued clearance led to a catch and drive from which Nuneaton's centre powered over to make the score 7-0.

Kenilworth stormed back and from a line out backs and forwards combined to send Paddy Grace over by the sticks to level the scores.

The next period was just shaded by Kenilworth and on 25 minutes centre Thomas made a great break only for a spilled ball to be scooped up by Nuneaton's pacey 11 who ran in from half way to make the score 14-7.

Shortly afterwards Nuneaton's scrum half danced through some midfield traffic to take the hosts 21-7 up.

Kenilworth made more inroads but, as was often the case on a frustrating afternoon, the last pass was misplaced.

Half time 21 - 7

Early in the second half Bobby Thompson was forced to retire and soon after Nick Collett joined the fray to add to his 300+ Kenilworth appearances.

Kenilworth probed again but an attacking lineout was stolen and several phases later Nuneaton's impressive full back  scored to make it 28-7. A strong line out from Kenilworth was turned over five metres out followed by a promising backs move halted by a forward pass.

On the hour Nuneaton's scrum dominance began to tell and from a series of scrums Nuneaton went over to go 35 -7 ahead.

Kenilworth staged a mini revival with territory and possession for a period but, as was the story of their afternoon, promising incursions ended in turnovers of various kinds.

One of these led to a 90 metre breakout and try for Nuneaton to make it 42 - 7 and from the resultant restart Nuneaton's second row ran in untouched to take the score to 49 -7.

There was still time for Kenilworth to attack from a series of penalties but Nuneaton held out to the whistle.
