Emphatic win over Worcester sends Kenilworth to top spot

Despite the grey skies and unrelenting rain, Kenilworth's first XV inflicted a 67-8 demolition on visitors Worcester to go top of the Midlands One West table.

A stark contrast to last week's weather but a good number of supporters, with their umbrellas, assembled to watch proceedings at Glasshouse Lane.

A gloomy day is never a match for a sunny disposition, and the hosts treated the crowd to a display of flair and control.

The visitors kicked off and faced an early, energetic Kenilworth attack. Within the first couple of minutes the home side had secured a scrum some 10m from the line.

In full control, Mike Ryan at number eight launched the attack, with Jack Rawlins crossing over for the opening try. The conversion kick narrowly missed the right-hand post. 5-0.

The visitors responded with a sustained sequence of attacking phases but very little territory was conceded by the hosts.

Pinned in their own half, Worcester continued to push but it was Kenilworth who secured the next score after a lovely display of quick hands moving the ball from Ben Harrison on one wing to debutant David Opoku-Fordjour on the other and back again for the Number 14 to touch down under the posts, after what could best be described as a dance in between.

With the conversion secured by Tyler Price, Kens had 12 points on the board in less than 12 minutes.

Worcester attacked hard again but the hosts' impressive defence held firm. A penalty was the visitors' reward though and an accurate kick put three points on the board for Worcester.

At the end of the first quarter, David Opoku-Fordjour made a fabulous run down the left wing gaining valuable territory.

A Kenilworth scrum was secured just 5m out and when this was collapsed, a penalty try was awarded stretching the hosts lead to 19-3.

The next 10 minutes saw both sides trading attacking moves, asking question of each other's defence but Kenilworth always looked in control.

Effort levels remained high from both squads and Worcester were rewarded with a try following a long kick-and-chase move that caught Kenilworth - uncharacteristically - unprepared.

This felt like it might have been a shift in momentum for the game but Kenilworth responded with the last move of the half with captain Bobby Thompson crossing the whitewash after another dominant scrum performance and a quickly taken tap-and-go.

The conversion was good and the half time score was 26-8.

Kenilworth opened the second half as they concluded the first, with Thompson making a stunning, powerful run deep into the opposition's half.

A scrum close to the try line offered up the next scoring opportunity and it was taken emphatically by Gaz Renowden stretching the lead to 31-8.

An exciting if somewhat scrappy period of play followed which concluded with another Kenilworth brace of tries.

Winger Ben Harrison scoring from lovely nudge by Tyler, with Price's conversion kick hitting the post.

This was added to shortly after with a great steal, a line breakthrough from Canning, and another try by Renowden for 43-8.

With the result no longer in any doubt the hosts continued to play with some considerable flair, adding another try within minutes - by Nathan Tilsley - successfully converted for a 50-8 lead.

Matthew Tilt also crashed over for his first Kenilworth try and the visitors were rarely advancing into Kenilworth's 22 and when they did, the hosts defence held fast. Handling errors though were surprisingly low for the conditions.

A lovely 50-22 kick from Price presented another set piece for the hosts to profit from and sure enough the maul made good progress with Mike Ryan adding five more points as he powered through, Tyler adding the extras.

The massive lead was further extended in the dying moments of the game when a quickly taken penalty by Bobby Thompson presented Myles Hibbs with the final score of the afternoon, wrapping things up at an impressive 67-8.
