Kenilworth Wardens netted their 100th goal of the season to confirm a second placed finish in the Coventry Alliance Division One.
Wardens went into their game against Gudwara in their final game of the season knowing they needed both to win and for Triumph Reserves to drop points in their final four games in order to finish second and guarantee promotion.
Kenilworth started well keeping possession without making chances.
Wardens first goal came on 20 minutes without them actually having a shot.
After good build up play, Luca Valle put in a brilliant cross from the left which was inadvertently headed into the bottom corner by the Gudwara player.
On 25 minutes Wardens took a two goal lead.
A poor pass from Gudwara's keeper was expertly read by captain Guy Pearson who athletically plucked the ball out of the air 30 yards out. Pearson then drove to the goal before hammering in from 15 yards out for this 25th goal of the year.
Wardens continued to dominate possession, and got their reward 10 minutes later.
Valle was once again involved. After a passing move which lasted over 10 passes, the midfielder crossed again to the back post, but the defensive header fell to Dan Twigger, who controlled and volleyed into the near post.
Both teams had a chance to score before the end of the half, when a good Gudwara move was expertly blocked by Matt Legg. And at the other end a Sam Taylor cross was met by Eamonn Richards on the volley, with the keeper making a smart save with his feet.
Wardens finished the half 3-0 wanting another two goals to seal their century and eyeing up their seventh clean sheet of the year.
Gudwara pressed higher in the second half and sloppy play from Wardens allowed the game to be played in their half.
But on 55 minutes a channel ball by James Bulter was latched onto by Dan Twigger who ran past his defender by passing home for his second of the game.
Pearson played Twigger through on three occasions but despite hitting the bar on one occasion he was unable to complete his hat trick.
Gudwara had a rare attack on 20 minutes, after a defensive error allowed their sub to go wide on the left, his cross floated in off the post to make the game 4-1.
With Gudwara seeing an unlikely way back in, they pressed higher and created their first clear cut chance of the game but Andy Whitehouse produced a brilliant double save before substitute Archie Evans cleared off the line.
After a 'handbag' argument between the two teams on 80 minutes, Wardens started playing the better football again.
Good build up play by Kenilworth saw the ball into the box.
Pearson kept the ball alive but lost it to the Gudwara defender. As he tried to play it out from the back, Twigger won the ball the ball 12 yards out and stroked home.
Twigger's finish was Wardens 100th goal in 24 games.
Just minutes later a cross from Josh Loan-Clarke went to Richards in the box, he beat his man and struck the ball to the near post, but to the relief of all players on the pitch Gudwaras' keeper made a stunning save.
On the 90th minute, Charlie Waters passed the ball to Richards, who played Waters in from his deep run after a high line from Gudwara. Initially thinking he was offside, Waters stopped his run, allowing the keeper to come out, however Waters sprinted beating the keeper to the ball narrowly. Allowing Twigger to pass the ball into the net for an open goal finish and his 16th of the year.
With Triumph losing to Fillongley the result confirmed Wardens second place finish behind RS Sports.
"This game is a reflection of the quality, commitment and attitude of our lads this year. We've had so many players play for me this year and every single one has brought into the culture that we have," said Richards.
"As a game, we played well, some really really good football in parts and on chances and possession we should have won by more.
"As a season, so happy. We got promoted to division 1 by default before the season started, we've continued to learn and grow as it's progressed. Finishing second and getting promoted as well as winning the Bedworth Nursing Cup is a massive achievement.
"Four promotions in a row and two cup wins has been great but I'm more excited by what we'll do next year and how well become better as a team and a club"
