Kenilworth Wardens Reserves suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Whitnash to end their pre-season, in a game played at Stockton FC.

Wardens started in a 4-3-3 formation, looking to utilise the skill and work rate of their forward players to press and nullify Whitnash's possession based game.

This largely worked, even if Wardens struggled to impose their own passing game.

Ben Edmunds had the first clear cut chance of the half but his shot was well saved by the Whitnash keeper.

The Leamington-based side began to work the ball from side to side and look to pick off Wardens but they were unable to given the shape and work rate of Wardens, who held strong.

It was an effort from difference that gave Whitnash the lead, as they took advantage of the space and time afforded to pick their spot from distance. 1-0 to Whitnash at half time.

During the break, Wardens made four substitutes in an effort to get minutes in the legs of as many players as possible ahead of the season start.

It was, however, another long effort just before the hour that put Whitnash 2-0 up, the ball going into the top corner past the Kenilworth keeper. Wardens kept their heads high and tried to play their game, but Whitnash's pressing game disrupted any flow that Wardens got in to.

Whitnash scored a third with 15 minutes left, despite their striker looking to be at least ten yards offside. 3-0 to Whitnash.

After this, Warden's passing play started to click as they forced a series of saves from the keeper as well as multiple set-pieces in dangerous areas, but sadly these failed to bring what would have been a well-deserved goal.

Despite the scoreline flattering the victors, Wardens never really got going until the game was beyond them and now have to switch their focus to the opening game of the season against Bourton and Frankton FC on September 11.
