Kenilworth Wardens Reserves lose out to lower league Yelvertoft in cup tie

Kenilworth Wardens travelled to division four outfit Yelvertoft in a Peter Toogood cup tie.

The hosts were full of confidence after already wrapping up the title in division four.

A few players away and injured - in particular in midfield - meant a starting role in an unfamiliar position for James Carro, whilst up front Sean Povey leading the line slightly struggling with a groin strain.

Deciding to play against the heavy wind and on quite a soft pitch, conditions were not ideal but Wardens settled into the game nicely keeping the ball particularly around the back four and with Loan Clarke and Watt seeing plenty of it.

Lewis Barry cut inside from the left and hit a decent effort though always rising as Wardens looked to create something.

Yelvertoft took the lead though when a sloppy pass was picked up in midfield, the clipped pass over Skelcey finding the striker who got a lucky ricochet off Stranks before slotting home.

Despite the strong wind the hosts rarely troubled Stranks in the Wardens goal with set pieces looking most likely.

However Wardens best chance came from a free kick of their own, Barry whipping one to the near post where a clever flick by Carro was well saved by the keeper.

On the hour mark what appeared to be a blatant foul on Carro wasn't given and with the ball finding the right winger a decent cross was met by the head of the striker who duly headed back across Stranks for 2-0.

While both teams were tidy in possession few chances were created.

Yelvertoft's third came with about 15 to play when a headed clearance made its way to the midfielder around 30 yards out, the shot taking a wicked deflection off the heel of the onrushing defender and rifling past Stranks.

Almost two minutes later an Evans corner was whipped in and an unmarked Carro on the run headed inches over from 8 yards.

Wardens did get a consolation when nice build up play made it to the feet of sub Harry Morris who produced a lovely piece of skill to flick in to the path of Charlie Waters who fired smartly into the roof of the net.

Wardens probed for the final 10 minutes but Yelvertoft hung on for the points.

"I knew it was going to be a tough game - they've won 13 from 14 and tied up their league already," said manager Adam Maltby.

"Unfortunately we had a few missing particularly in midfield and Sean wasn't 100 oer cent and I've got a defender in midfield.

"I felt we forced it to much for my liking however there wasn't much movement ahead of those looking to play out, and while we were neat and tidy in parts we never really threatened, particularly in the second half when we had the wind behind us, I'd like to have tested the keeper more.

"The goals are disappointing as the 1st is avoidable, the second several players have stopped expecting a foul but we needed to stay switched on. The third is typical, I've been asking us to close shots and get tighter and when we finally do it's come off the heel.

"But again we've scored a really good goal, Josh was very busy put a real shift in, Harry Morris excellent when came on. Another day the two best chances for Carro go in."
