Kenilworth Wardens Reserves travelled to Balsall for their final game of the season knowing a win would see them leapfrog their opponents into fifth position in the Coventry Alliance Division Three.

With a few knocks in midfield and up front, manager Adam Maltby was able to bring in Eamonn Richards and Dan Twigger to the Reserves.

Both teams started the game brightly moving the ball around nicely from back to front with Luca Valle and Richards linking well and looking to bring in the wingers who were a real threat.

After a few half chances for both sides dealt with routinely by both goalkeeper's the deadline was broken on 27 minutes when a ball from Charlie Waters was retrieved on the left by captain Evans who fired a low cross in for Twigger to tap home.

One became two just five minutes later when a ball from Valle found Twigger outside the edge of the box, he set himself before firing low into the bottom right corner - a wonderful strike.

The goal seemed to prove a turning point for the remainder of the half with Wardens becoming sloppy and sitting deeper allowing Balsall to come forward.

This led to Balsall equalising and then five minutes later adding a second with a well worked effort from down the Wardens right.

Straight from the restart Wardens then conceded from a soft penalty.

But on the hour mark a Skelcey free kick was met by the head of fellow centre half Oldham who headed back across goal to equalise for the visitors

Maltby then threw on subs Sean Povey and shortly after Will Kershaw in order to change the shape.

Within minutes he was rewarded as a Povey flick-on went through to the lively Cameron Holden who was able to just knick in and poke the ball past the onrushing keeper to put Wardens ahead once again.

On 75 minutes another Povey flick-on was followed up by a Valle effort straight at the keeper who could only parry straight to the onrushing Richards who duly slotted home for his first goal in 40 games.

Wardens were able to settle down a little but the hosts got back into the game when a corner from nothing was headed past Stranks to move Balsall within one.

And the scoring was not complete, as another clipped ball again found the head of Povey who flicked on to Twigger to run in behind a tiring Balsall defence.

Another cool finish past the standing keeper wrapped the points up for Kenilworth.

Speaking after the game Maltby said: "Ultimately today I said the main thing was to get the win with the better goal difference we'd finish above them and it's always nice to finish the season on a high.

"We were very good for the first 25-30 minutes, got the goals I felt we probably deserved.

"Unfortunately we probably let our foot of the gas a bit and that was frustrating and to come in at the break at 2-2 they'd have been happier.

"But we've made a few changes, changed to a slightly more attacking mindset even though it was 3-3 at that point and I'm just delighted that it worked and we went on to add goals. The lads put in a great shift tonight I couldn't have asked more it's great to end with a win.

"Since I came in at Christmas it was about getting to this point, purely steadying and seeing where we could finish - we kick on next season after a decent rest."
