Two sides from Kenilworth Cricket Club held their first competitive fixtures this weekend as The Warwickshire County Cricket League season got underway.

The first eleven lost by eight wickets to Solihull Blossomfield, and the second eleven secured a winning draw with Bablake.

Kenilworth CC 1st XI

Kenilworth 126-10 (one point) (43 overs) lost to Solihull Blossomfield 128-2 (20 points) (21.3 overs) on Saturday.

Despite a fine 66 from Kenilworth's opener Joe Atkinson, who hit 10 boundaries in his knock, the first eleven side slumped to 126 all out on Saturday. An accurate Blossomfield bowling attack pinned the side down, and Kenilworth find runs hard to come by across the 43 overs.

Skipper Connor Shingler (20) and Dave Edmunds (17) were the only other two Kenilworth batsmen to reach double figures.

Kenny took three for 20 and Bentley three for 28 for the hosts.

Bashir and Kinman picked up a wicket each whilst the Kenilworth cause was not helped with two run outs.

Blossomfield then cantered to 128-2 to win the match with 23 overs to spare. Opener Baker made a solid 71 and Thompson was unbeaten on 47.

The Kenilworth wicket takers were Stuart Cope and Shingler.

Kenilworth CC 2nd XI

Kenilworth 225-4 (17 points) (45 overs) hung on to claim a winning draw against visitors Bablake (9 points) (45 overs) on Saturday afternoon.

The home side posted a good 225-4 with opener, Mark Stranks hitting 48, as he and youngster, Shyaan Imam (18) shared in a 79-run first wicket partnership.

Kenilworth reached 235 for four as Dave Smithson then added an excellent 65 not out as he shared in another 79 run partnership for the fourth wicket with Charlie Stranks (31).

Mohammed took 2-17 for the visitors, with Chellin and Bailing taking a wicket apiece.

Bablake were not fazed in their reply as they chipped away at the Kenilworth score.

Mohammed made a fine unbeaten 62, Patel 28 and Auguste 25, with Downine and Aftab both adding 17 each.

However, their run chase was in vain as the Kenilworth bowlers held their nerve and Bablake ended the day on 209-7 some 27 runs short of the target when overs ran out.

Spinners Tom Skinner took 3-36 and Chris Beech 2-44 for Kenilworth with Sam Leach claiming 1-13 and Dave Gamble 1-25.

Debutant Josh Charlwood claimed two good outfield catches in a match that saw both sides concede a combined 94 extras.

There was no match for the third eleven who will play a friendly match next Saturday before their Cotswold Hills League season starts on 1 May.
