Works to install new average speed cameras in Berkswell are underway, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) has confirmed.

In its "continued commitment to improving road safety" the local authority is also installing the average speed cameras in Balsall Common, Meriden and Hampton in Arden.

Meriden locals had been told the cameras would be installed in August, but a recent update from the parish council said it was "extremely disappointed" to announce the works had been pushed.

SMBC said all the cameras will be installed by the end of December.

The scheme is being funded by the council's HS2 road safety fund.

News of the cameras has received a mixed reception across the villages.

Cllr Ken Hawkins, said: "Speeding is still one of the biggest causes of death and injuries on our roads so it's important to do all we can to prevent people from driving above the speed limit.

"Our new digital average speed cameras can accurately identify speeding vehicles and help deter this extremely dangerous behaviour."

Superintendent Gareth Mason, head of roads' policing operations at West Midlands Police said: "Our key aim is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in road collisions.

"Encouraging compliance with speed limits is crucial to reducing the risk on our roads.

"To this end, we work closely with Solihull Council and I am pleased to see the expansion of ASE cameras in the borough which we will enforce vigorously."
