Visitors to Kenilworth Castle this month will be offered an exciting behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into looking after the 400 historic buildings, monuments, and sites within English Heritage's care.

The charity is holding a 'Conservation in Action' day at the Castle on 19 September between 10am and 3:30pm.

It aims to show members of the public the unique and diverse skills that go into maintaining cherished places like Kenilworth Castle for generations to come.

The event in Kenilworth will bring together different departments from English Heritage as well as specialist contractors and suppliers.

There will be a walk and talk with the Gardens Team, demonstrations of high-level inspection work using abseiling ropes, survey technology using drones, medieval masonry, decorative plasterwork, and the chance for visitors to try their hand making clay sculptures and tiles.

Warwickshire Archaeology, who recently oversaw the discovery of several 13th century catapults in Kenilworth Castle's grounds, will also be displaying some recent finds from the site.

For those interested in a future career in the heritage sector, they are warmly encouraged to speak to the English Heritage team who will be on hand to share advice.

Families and children can have fun with hands-on activities at English Heritage's Conservation in Action van, which tours the country and is stopping in at Kenilworth for the event.

English Heritage buildings conservation manager, Liz Knight, commented: "A place like Kenilworth Castle requires so many people and skills to look after it, from day-to-day maintenance to large-scale projects.

"This event is a chance for us to celebrate and showcase this, and for you to see how your entrance and membership fees support the ongoing conservation of our national heritage sector."

Entry to the event is included in the price of an admission ticket and admission is free for English Heritage members.
