Glasshouse Lane roadworks not expected to be finished before new Kenilworth School opens
Roadworks along Glasshouse Lane are not expected to be finished before the new Kenilworth School opens this September.
Kenilworth Town Council has issued an update on the works, which will see new cycle lanes, toucan crossings and an access road built.
A 20mph speed zone will also be created in front of the school, with speed humps and cushions installed.
Warwickshire County Council's contractor CR Reynolds Ltd began work on site in April but is not expected to be finished until the autumn.
As a result the firm will focus on the areas immediately around the school entrances initially. The rest of the works will be completed during the start of the autumn term.
The contractor's working hours will be 7am to 5.pm Monday to Friday, with certain operations restricted to after 8am to minimise disruption to residents.
The traffic lights on Glasshouse Lane will been in place full-time to keep workers safe. These will be monitored at peak times.
The works will primarily focus upon completing the areas
Completed works to date:
- The site compound is in situ.
- Trial holes to locate services are being conducted in the north side of the verge.
- Vegetation – site clearance work ahead of the excavation activities.
The update also said locals have objected to the design of the new layout for the junction between Leyes Lane and Dencer Drive which was expected to include traffic lights.
The school's design team has reviewed the layout and have submitted an alternative to the original proposal and now propose to install only a toucan crossing.
A WCC statement said: "We apologise for any inconvenience the works may cause and want to thank you, for your on-going continued support during the construction period."
The long-term works will include:
- Construction of a separate access with right turn lane onto Glasshouse Lane.
- Construction of new shared footways / cycleways along Glasshouse Lane, Leyes Lane and Dencer Drive.
- Installation of two toucan (pedestrian and cycle) crossings on Glasshouse Lane.
- Installation of a traffic signal junction at Dencer Drive / Leyes Lane with pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities.
- Creation of a 20mph zone on Glasshouse Lane along the school frontage.
- Raised humps and speed cushions on Glasshouse Lane along the school frontage.
- No waiting restrictions on Dencer Drive and Leyes Lane to protect the new signals from indiscriminate parking.
All of the above works are being carried out under a S278 Agreement which has been signed between the developer, Kenilworth Multi Academy Trust and Warwickshire County Council.
Keep up to date with the works here.
