Preliminary works have started at Castle Farm Recreation Centre as final preparations are made before the site is demolished and rebuilt.

The works include archaeological investigations and disconnecting services.

And Warwick District Council said contracts with AR Demolition and Kier would be signed imminently and a start date for construction announced soon.

During the works the skate park and children's playground will remain open to the public, along with access to the adjoining playing fields.

Planning permission for the new centre was given in September and the facility was then closed in December with work supposed to begin in January.

Portfolio holder for economy and culture, Councillor Liam Bartlett said: "We are pleased that activity has begun on site and will be making an announcement very soon with a start date for construction of these exciting new facilities."

The council has not given any information on when work would begin on Abbey Fields Leisure Centre which was also closed in December.

Further updates on the Castle Farm Recreation Centre and Abbey Fields Swimming Pool redevelopment plans will be made available on the Warwick District Council website.
