A new Wetherpoon pub planned for Kenilworth town centre has been handed a major boost after district councillors approved its application for an alcohol licence.

The chain announced £2 million plans to open a pub at the former Poundland shop at the Square in July, with a separate planning application also submitted for the project.

And following a decision by Warwick District Council's licensing and regulatory panel today (November 9), the new venue has taken a major step forward.

Speaking at this morning's meeting Wetherspoon Legal director Mr Conner described the proposal as a "relatively straightforward application" and said the chain hopes to welcome a "broad customer base".

"That is really important to what we do, we don't attract a particular type of clientele," he said.

"Whether it be young or old there really is something for everybody at all times of the day."

Addressing concerns from councillors and neighbours, Mr Conner also said Wetherspoon would work with locals to prevent any disturbance from the pub.

"We place great store in building links with our neighbours, they are our customers after all - or our potential customers," he added.

"We cannot alienate them, and we have a responsibility to live responsibly with our neighbours and not to impinge upon their right to quiet and peaceful living.

"We do have provision for residents' meetings.

"Generally, we would invite residents within four to six weeks of opening to come and meet the manager. We would also invite them before the premises opens to have a look around."

Environmental Health had originally objected to the application but withdrew its comments after agreeing nine different conditions to the licence with Wetherspoon.

Conditions included limiting use of the beer garden between 8am to 9pm and preventing smokers from taking drinks with them when they briefly exit the premises.

Environmental Health officer Stacey Walsham added: "We have gone through various conditions backwards and forwards with the applicant and we have now agreed nine conditions.

"We are happy, and we will withdraw our objection if these conditions are included in the licence."

Wetherspoon also agreed to have security on the doors from 9pm and to impose a 'Challenge 25' policy.

A decision on the pub's planning application is yet to be made.
