Up to 25 Afghan families to be given permanent homes in Warwick District

By James Smith 1st Nov 2021

Up to 25 Afghan families are to be given permanent homes in Warwick District, with a further 25 families also finding refuge in Stratford on Avon.

Around 100 people will be given accommodation in the area after the Home Office announced that Afghans coming to the UK through resettlement routes will receive indefinite permission to remain.

Permanent homes have been arranged by Warwick District Council's housing team with public health and community groups working to help settle those arriving in Warwickshire.

WDC's portfolio holder for homes, health and wellbeing, Cllr Jan Matecki has welcomed the announcement, sharing his own family's experiences resettling after the Second World War.

"As a child from a displaced family the situation faced in the past weeks by those fleeing Afghanistan is very close to my heart," he said.

"My parents were amongst the lucky ones who benefited from the generosity of this country at the end of the Second World War when as Polish nationals they found themselves in a situation when they had no home to return to.

"I am therefore proud that our council is now going the extra mile to support and provide a safe and welcoming home to as many families and individuals from Afghanistan as possible."
