Locals are being asked to stay away from Kenilworth Rugby Club after a number of travellers moved onto the pitch last night (May 29).

The Glasshouse Lane club has said it is working with Warwickshire Police and local authorities to resolve the situation.

Police have been on site and the club said it is hoping to move the travellers on "as swiftly as possible" to make sure its staff and members remain safe.

A statement on the club website said: "There are a large number of caravans and cars on the pitch which is very disappointing and the safety of our members and staff is paramount.

"The police are aware and we are also in touch with the relevant authorities to attempt to make their departure as swift as possible.

"We would ask members not to attend the club whilst the situation is still being resolved.

"The clubhouse will of course be closed until further notice."

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said: "We were made aware of an unauthorised encampment on Glasshouse Lane in Kenilworth shortly before 8pm yesterday (Monday).

"Officers are engaging with them and working with the landowners at this time."

The news comes just weeks after pupils at Myton School were forced to stay at home for the day, as travellers moved onto the school's playing fields.
