The 'vulnerable person' who was first reported on a bridge on the M42 has been safely removed, and the road reopened emergency services have confirmed.

National Highways was first alerted to the incident at around 7pm on Wednesday 13 March, and both carriageways of the motorway were closed near Birmingham Airport.

Emergency services remained at the scene, while many motorists were stuck waiting to be allowed off the motorway.

For most of the six-hour closure, National Highways was unable to say when the road would reopen between junctions six and seven.

But at around 11pm Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) said the person was "safely off the bridge" and emergency services were starting to reopen the road.

The person "will be receiving help and support" from medical professionals, the update said.
