The possibility of extending the 20mph speed zone in the town centre will be discussed by councillors after a local resident called on Kenilworth Town Council to investigate the idea.

Resident Dyliss Skinner renewed calls for the temporary 20mph zone between Abbey End and St John's roundabout to be extended.

Warwickshire County Council is currently considering plans to introduce such zones across the county.

But Ms Skinner called on town councillors to discuss the plans now.

In her letter she said: "The town council will be aware that the county council is reviewing the possibility of 20mph speed limits across the county and are reporting on this in April 2022.

"Across the county other town and parish councils – Dunchurch and Shipston for example – have put forward 20mph motions for their town centres.

"I am requesting that Kenilworth Town Council also do this to include all the town centre, Bertie Road and the east-west roads in the town centre such as Barrow Road."

A petition calling for similar measures was handed to WCC by local councillors last June.

And speaking at last week's full town council meeting Cllr James Kennedy said the topic needed to be debated properly.

"I am sure that many residents would support the 20mph speed limit across the town," he said.

"However, we are also aware that there are some people who would be opposed to this change.

"There are a number of members of this council who are supportive of the 20mph speed limit, and I would suggest that we invite one or more of them to bring a motion to our next meeting where it can be properly debated."

However, Cllr Rob Barry said that KTC may be too late by postponing the discussion until its next meeting.

"My concern is that if the county is discussing this in April, will we have missed the boat by waiting until the next meeting," he said.

Cllr Rik Spencer, who sits on the cross-party group on WCC investigating the county wide 20mph zones, said he was unable to comment on when the county council would discuss the plans.

A public consultation was held last year on plans to build speed humps and extend the 20mph limit in the town centre. WCC decided against the speed humps after more than 100 residents objected to the idea.
