Town councillors have objected to plans to replace the Woodside Hotel with 55 homes.

Prior approval has already been given for the hotel to be knocked down, much to the disappointment of locals.

But the detailed scheme to redevelop the site into 43 houses and a block of 12 apartments is yet to be considered by Warwick District Council.

And at the most recent meeting of Kenilworth Town Council's planning committee, members raised a number of concerns about the development.

"It would be regrettable to lose a further heritage asset of the town, locally listed within WDC's Local Plan," KTC's objection said.

"This building has been judged to hold significant historic value to the town and residents.

"Its loss would be a huge disappointment, particularly when replaced with very standard designed homes."

Councillors also questioned why only 16 per cent of the homes would be affordable, when 40 per cent should be, and said the mix of housing was "insufficient".

Members also said there was "no proven housing need for this additional development on the east side of Kenilworth".

And plans to cut down 32 trees, remove a historic pond and to "decimate" the current orchard were criticised.

"A further consultation should be undertaken to fully understand the additional need these houses would bring for services within the town, i.e., GP surgeries and dentists etc," the objection added.

"Local circumstances have changed in recent years and any previous consultation can no longer be considered reflective of the current position."
