Kenilworth residents affected the most by the cost of living crisis could pay no council tax if a district initiative goes ahead.

Following a decision by Warwick District Council's cabinet yesterday, the local authority will consult residents and stakeholders about removing the need for struggling households to pay any council tax.

Since 2015 nearly 5,000 local households have received an 85 per cent discount on their tax bills through the Local Council Tax Reduction Scheme (LCTRS).

But the council has now started a process that could see this upped to a 100 per cent discount for working age residents.

Speaking at yesterday's cabinet meeting council leader Cllr Andrew Day said: "What we are initiating here is a process that may take some time, but it gives us an option later, having done this properly, to make an informed decision about whether we feel council tax reduction would assist our residents at this time."

He added: "It won't happen overnight but we do want to hear what our residents and other stakeholders have to say on this."

The decision to consult residents on further reductions was approved unanimously with Cllr Mini Mangat saying: "We don't know how long the cost of living crisis is going to go on for and even if we can't help people now, we need to look into the future."

Cllr Richard Hales added: "Its actions speak louder than words.

"We are getting on with something, not just sitting there and looking at different ways of doing things."
