The Talisman Theatre and Arts Centre is "thrilled to present" Noël Coward's timeless comedic masterpiece, Present Laughter, a sharp and witty exploration of fame, relationships, and the trials of mid-life.

Written in 1939 but delayed in its debut due to the Second World War, this farcical comedy has enjoyed enduring popularity through multiple revivals on stage and screen.

Under the direction of Vanessa Comer, this "absurd comedy" is the "perfect antidote to the winter blues".

Set in the 1940s, Present Laughter invites audiences into the chaotic world of Garry Essendine, an internationally renowned actor and writer (closely modelled on Coward himself) whose self-obsessed persona is as dazzling as it is unravelling.

Overwhelmed by his admirers, producers, and an eccentric young playwright, Garry prepares for an African tour as his relationships begin to spiral out of control. The last few days have been filled with drama, tension and chaos for the star actor.

Essendine – an anagram of 'neediness' – struggles with personal identity whilst avoiding the pitfalls of fame and fortune as he faces his newest obstacle: entering a mid-life crisis.

The production features a stellar cast, filled with Talisman regulars and exciting new talent. Leading the charge is Phil Reynolds as Garry Essendine, supported by a dynamic group of performers who breathe life into Coward's characters.

The Talisman Theatre is pleased to welcome a blend of fresh faces and familiar talent to its stage for this production. Ruth Linnett joins as Joanna Lyppiatt, Simon Truscott takes on the role of Morris Dixon, and Aoife O'Gorman appears as Monica Reed. Additionally, Ruth Jones returns to the Talisman stage after nearly a decade to portray Lady Saltburn.

This talented cast is set to deliver a memorable performance.

Last performed on the Talisman stage in 1979, the revival of this classic is perfectly timed to coincide with the theatrical world celebrating the 125th anniversary, in December 2024, of Sir Noël Coward's birth.

During his incredible life, Coward achieved enduring success as a playwright from his teens onwards with plays such as Hay Fever, Private Lives and Blithe Spirit which have remained in regular theatre repertoire across the years. He also composed hundreds of songs, in addition to well over a dozen musical theatre works.

Reflecting on the enduring appeal of Present Laughter, director Vanessa Comer shares: "Coward wrote Present Laughter as a star vehicle for himself, weaving Garry's eccentricities from his own personality and drawing inspiration for the colourful supporting cast from his inner circle.

Delayed three years by the outbreak of WWII, the play's eventual debut was met with critical acclaim, leading to numerous revivals across stage, screen, and television."

Vanessa continues: "We are thrilled to present this enduring classic, with the formidable Phil Reynolds taking on the role of Garry Essendine. We hope this production brings laughter and light to brighten these gloomy winter nights."

With a set design that has been expertly crafted by John Ellam, this theatrical experience will draw you into the lives of the rich and famous of 1940s London.

First performed in 1942, Present Laughter has enjoyed remarkable success, including notable productions at the Old Vic, which earned Olivier and WhatsOnStage Awards.

With its razor-sharp dialogue, larger-than-life characters and timeless themes, the play remains a favourite among audiences and critics alike.

Looking for a night of laughter and charm? Then this promises to be an unforgettable evening of comedy, chaos, and Coward's unparalleled wit.

Present Laughter runs from Monday 10 February to Saturday 15 February 2025 at the Talisman Theatre, Kenilworth.

Show times are 7:30 pm each evening with good availability across all weekday nights, with Friday and Saturday selling very quickly.
