SEN SHOTS Basketball, based at Kenilworth School, is expanding inclusive sports opportunities in Coventry and Warwickshire with its inclusive basketball sessions tailored specifically for children with special educational needs (SEN).
The initiative was founded in March 2024 by Jo, who was inspired by her son Noah - a non-verbal autistic child - to create a space where children like him could experience the joy of sport in a supportive, understanding environment.
Recognising a significant gap in accessible sports opportunities for SEN children, Jo and her partner Hugh launched SEN SHOTS with the aim of providing more than just physical activity - it's about confidence, community, and connection.
The programme is led by Basketball England–accredited coaches who are fully DBS verified, ensuring a safe and professional environment.
SEN SHOTS typically welcomes children aged between four and 17, and crucially, no formal diagnosis is required to participate - only a desire to be part of something fun and inclusive.
SEN SHOTS offers two main session types to meet varying needs. The Sensory Basketball sessions create a calm, low-pressure space with an emphasis on sensory comfort, individual space, and gentle interaction with coaches.

Sessions use silent basketballs, soft play equipment, and large crash mats, and provide a range of sensory resources - ideal for children who are new to the environment or have complex sensory profiles.
Meanwhile, the Drills & Games sessions are more active, featuring coach-guided activities, adapted drills, and team-based games. These sessions encourage engagement across a range of abilities, and carers are welcome to join in the action.
All sessions are parent or carer-accompanied, reinforcing the programme's family-first ethos.
This model not only provides children with consistent emotional support but also allows carers to share in their progress and achievements, turning every session into a bonding experience.
In March 2025, SEN SHOTS Basketball took part in their first-ever Disability Opportunities in Sports UK & Special Olympics GB event in Nottingham, where they won gold.
In the summer, they returned to the competition — this time held in Sheffield — and were praised for their exceptional skill and spirit on the court. One of their players, Tyrese, earned the Star Award for outstanding achievement and improved player confidence.
SEN SHOTS has already made a big impact. During the summer holidays, it ran a series of fully booked holiday sessions at Kenilworth School as part of the Department of Education HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) summer programme, highlighting the growing demand for SEN-specific initiatives.
Sessions are held regularly at Kenilworth School, with various dates across the year.

Bookings can be made here, or registering via the Warwickshire HAF platform. For the latest updates and session details, families can follow SEN SHOTS Basketball on Facebook or on Instagram.
"SEN SHOTS Basketball has been truly inspiring, opening up sport to children with SEN in a fun and welcoming way while building confidence, friendships and family connections," said Paul Flowers, KMAT Leisure Manager.
"From packed out holiday camps to national competition success, their impact is felt far and wide.
"We're proud that they love being part of KMAT Leisure, and we love having them as part of our community."
KMAT Leisure manages the sports facilities at The Kenilworth School, bookings can be made online here.
