Locals are encouraged to admire the extra colour in Abbey Fields this weekend when SI Kenilworth & District celebrate both International Women's Day and the Commission on the Status for Women.

On Saturday 8 March, the group will be decorating some of the park benches with inspirational quotes from "wonderful women".

"We will be decorating some of the park benches in Abbey Fields with inspirational quotes from wonderful women to celebrate International Women's Day - look out for the Purple in the Park," the group said.

The commission is a global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality, the rights and the empowerment of women.

This year it celebrates 30 years since 189 countries signed up to the Beijing Platform for Action when world leaders agreed to enshrine that promise.

Last November, Kenilworth & District Soroptimists backed an international campaign standing against gender based violence by 'oranging' the town over a 16-day period.

The campaign came as part of the UN 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Based Violence which runs until 10 December 2024.
