A councillor has revealed shoplifting remains a "big problem" in the town, particularly for the major retailers in Kenilworth.

Speaking at the most recent Kenilworth Town Council meeting, Cllr Richard Dickson provided an update on police activity in the town.

He said: "Shoplifting in the town is a big problem, particularly for the local police because the major incidents happen in the large supermarkets who do not use the town-centre wide radio system that the smaller retailers use.

"It is the big supermarkets - B&M included - where it seems it is [shoplifting] a cost of being in business.

"They rightly don't encourage staff to approach people."

Police data shows shoplifting accounted for just over 14 per cent of the crimes reported in Kenilworth in the 12 months leading up to the end of May 2026.

Only incidents of anti-social behaviour, and violence and sexual offences were reported to police more in the town.

Cllr Dickson also said parking outside schools was becoming an issue again.

"One of the other things they are prioritising is inappropriate parking outside schools," he added.

"Last summer most of the schools - not all of them - had the yellow zig-zag markings painted outside."

His words came before a vote at Warwickshire County Council to back more responsibility to tackle 'pavement parking'.
