A section of the M42 has been shut this weekend as two bridges are installed.

The motorway will be shut between junctions five and six from 0.01am on Saturday 15 October to 5am on Monday 17 October.

The bridges were set to be installed on the first weekend of October but the plans had to be stopped as engineers found a fault with the bridges.

A National Highways statement said: "Before we closed the road on Friday 30 September, specialist engineers were completing routine, final checks prior to moving the first bridge.

"During this time we discovered that the deflection, which is the movement at either end of the bridge, exceeded the amount expected when it was being lifted.

"Safety is always our top priority, and a decision was made to cancel the closure and postpone the work in order for a detailed investigation to be carried out."

Works form part of a £282million project to build a new junction (5a) which is expected to be completed in 2025.

National Highways said: "We're upgrading the M42 junction 6 to enable better movement of traffic on and off the A45, supporting access to Birmingham International Airport and train station as well as preparing capacity for the new HS2 station.

"Our work includes creating a new junction on the M42 and building a dual carriageway between this new junction and Clock Interchange."
