'Save our Fields' - petition launched as locals say no more homes for Kenilworth
By James Smith 6th Jul 2026
Residents have just five days left to sign a petition calling on the district councils not to let any more housing estates be built to the south of Kenilworth.
Warwick and Stratford-on-Avon District Councils will this month discuss the next steps for the South Warwickshire Local Plan (SWLP) as it reaches its latter stages.
Locals are set to have their final say on the major planning document, before it is submitted to the Secretary of State for approval.
The most recent draft has allocated 751 homes to the south of Kenilworth, as well as 4,000 on land between Westwood Heath Road and the town.
The 'Save our Fields' petition is calling on the local authorities to think again with the land around Rouncil Lane.
"The area is green belt and should remain so," the petition said.
"It is highly productive arable farmland used for arable crops. There are no justifiable reasons for the land to be re-designated for housing."
It continued: "The area is part of the Historical Forest of Arden Landscape & is visible from Kenilworth Castle - a grade I listed building.
"Housing would be visible from the castle, which is against the Historic England guidelines."
Other concerns include the impact on wildlife, lack of public transport, impact on traffic on Rouncil Lane, and the impact on local schools and medical facilities.
Across the two districts, 14 'strategic growth' locations have been identified, with new houses set to be built around existing local towns.
This has come after hundreds of potential development sites were suggested by members of the public and then whittled down by the councils.
Two 'new settlements' have also been picked for thousands of new homes and new communities to be built.
One has been chosen for each district from a potential list of 13.
This latest consultation - the 'regulation 19' consultation - will run for six weeks and will allow locals to have their say on the plan the authorities plan to submit to the planning inspectorate.
Work began on the SWLP in 2021 but has been hit by various delays.
The councils only have until December 31 to submit the plan for approval.
A council report shared alongside the draft said: "The SWLP is required to deliver a significant amount of new development over the period 2025-2050; 54,925 homes to meet local housing needs and up to 366 hectares of employment land to meet local strategic and non-strategic employment needs.
"In addition, the needs of particular groups such as Self and Custom-builders and Gypsies and Travellers are also met through the SWLP."
