Town councillors campaigning to improve safety for pupils outside the new Kenilworth School have said things are "moving in the right direction" but remain "far from ideal".

Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) has continued to press its county colleagues for the last year to improve access to the Glasshouse Lane site for pedestrians.

Local representatives have voiced numerous concerns about crossings at the site and the surrounding roads - particularly Knowle Hill.

Councillors have written to Warwickshire County Council (WCC) a number of times over the past 12 months, asking for faster progress on safety measures around the school - particularly on those which were due to be completed before the school opened last September.

But following a recent meeting between KTC, WCC and local representatives, Cllr Zoe Leventhal said things were moving in the right direction.

"I have some positive news to report developments-wise," she told the most recent KTC meeting.

"We wrote to Cllr Jan Matecki, the portfolio holder at the county council, in June and we met him on site with Cllr Tracey Drew and a member of the cycling group and we focused on three things.

"Number one outside the school and he was very engaged at looking at the issues there.

"He has agreed to take that away with his team."

Also discussed was the "unsatisfactory nature" of the designs for the Stansfield Road roundabout which is due to be built later this year.

Cllr Leventhal said feedback had been sent back to the county council.

She also told councillors that just over half of students currently walk to Kenilworth School, with three per cent cycling and 27 per cent being dropped off by car.

However, she added: "Slightly less positive was the residents' parking consultation which has been promised but still not materialised.

"He [Cllr Matecki] has taken that back to officers to find out what is happening there."
