Residents blast 'madness' of 14-month Kenilworth road closure
By James Smith 17th Feb 2026
Locals have voiced their frustrations at the "madness" of the upcoming 14-month closure of a busy Kenilworth road for HS2 works.
Dalehouse Lane will shut in April 2026 until June 2027 so the new bridge - which will carry the road over the railway line - can be finished and connected.
The closure is the latest in a series of HS2 works, but will be the longest of any local road closure by quite a margin.
With the news announced last week, locals were quick to take to social media to vent their frustration.
"Madness," one local wrote. "The other road from Coventry to Kenilworth [A429] better not also close for any period during this time."
Another said: "Really can't believe there is any real justification for such a long closure as the vast majority of the new bridge is off-line from the existing road.
"Just an entitled attitude by HS2 because they can.
"Not the slightest consideration for users of Dalehouse Lane."
Another reader agreed saying: "I don't understand why it couldn't be built like the ones on Stoneleigh road or Coventry Road and closed short term to 'connect' it up."
HS2 has confirmed Dalehouse Lane will close from Tuesday 7 April 2026 until Monday 7 June 2027.
A diversion will be in place throughout the closures.
Design details for the 50-metre bridge for Dalehouse Lane have already been approved.
"We need to close Dalehouse Lane to construct the new overbridge that will raise over the HS2 railway," the notice said.
"There will be increased construction activity during the closure and you will experience some disruption to your travel times.
"Please plan ahead to avoid delays to your journey."
Kenilworth Town Council has repeatedly called for better communication from HS2 and Warwickshire County Council over road closures, saying multiple routes in and out of the town should not be impacted at the same time.
