Red tape slowing plans to turn former Kenilworth landfill into public space
Land ownership issues are slowing down plans to turn a former Kenilworth landfill site into a public green space.
Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) is working towards turning the land around Cherry Orchard to public use, with the scheme originally planned to be completed by the end of 2024.
A management plan for the site is being created by Warwickshire County Council and is "almost complete" but is waiting on final land ownership problems to be resolved before it is completed.
"Part of the site is not owned by Warwickshire County Council, but by Warwick District Council," council leader, Cllr James Kennedy, said at the most recent KTC meeting.
"It is not the responsibility of the district council green spaces team, because it is district council housing land.
"Therefore there is a discussion going on so the district council housing department allows changes to be made there, which will include some tree planting, which will hopefully take place during this season."
Volunteers are hoped to help with the planting at the site, with a new group potentially called 'Friends of the Cherry Orchard' to be created.
Cllr Kennedy said there was a lot of interest from locals in the site, which he described as a "spectacular area" particular due to the number of bee orchids there.
