The railway line from Coventry to Leamington Spa will be closed for eight days at the end of the month so HS2 can build a new bridge.

The high speed rail developer will shut the route from July 29 until August 7 and the workforce will be on site 24/7.

"We are constructing an overbridge that will allow the HS2 railway to pass under the existing Coventry to Leamington Spa railway," an HS2 statement said.

"To carry out these works we will be closing the Coventry to Leamington Spa railway line over a period of eight days."

During the Coventry to Leamington Spa closure, HS2 will:

  • Remove the existing signals, railway tracks and excavate the embankment.
  • Use specialist transport vehicles to lift and install the new bridge into place.
  • Reconstruct the embankment. Install drainage, rail, ballast and sleepers. Check track alignment.
  • Reinstate track/signal furniture.
  • Survey the bridge and re-open the railway.

"We have been working in partnership with Network Rail to plan the temporary closure of the Coventry to Leamington Rail Line," the statement added.

"The closure will commence at midnight on 29 July 2023, and we will install the bridge and re-open the railway at 8.30am on 7 August 2023. Over this period, we will be working 24/7."

Local residents had already been warned of the closure last month, with a Kenilworth Town Council report saying the closure would take place later this summer.
