Pupils pedal to success with Bikeability
By James Smith 7th Oct 2026
Year 5 pupils at Balsall Common Primary School Academy have started their Bikeability training as schools across the nation celebrate Cycle to School Week.
Pupils are learning essential cycling skills, including bike safety checks, signalling, braking and safe road positioning.
Later in the week, those who achieve Level 1 will progress to riding on local roads with their instructors.
The school is "proud of the enthusiasm and determination shown" by all participants and hopes the experience will "inspire more families to enjoy cycling as a healthy, environmentally friendly way to travel".
To mark the start, pupils welcomed Mayor of Solihull, Cllr Sardul Singh Marwa, and ward councillor Terry Baker, who visited the school to congratulate the children on their hard work and commitment.
Emma King, Year 5 Lead, said: "We are incredibly proud of our Year 5 pupils for the mature and responsible attitude they show during their Bikeability training.
"The children will gain valuable life skills that will help keep them safe whilst cycling and encourage them to enjoy being active outdoors."
Darren Greenall, cycle training manager at Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, said: "The team always enjoys working with pupils at Balsall Common Primary School Academy.
"Their enthusiasm and willingness to learn make the sessions a pleasure to deliver, and we are delighted to be supporting the school during Cycle to School Week.
"Solihull has recently been recognised by our funder, the Bikeability Trust, as one of the most successful cycle training providers in the UK. With 86% of Year 5 pupils taking part in on-road cycle training, we are helping children develop the skills, confidence and awareness needed to cycle safely on local roads."
