Plans to turn former Kenilworth landfill site into public open space move forward
Plans to turn a former landfill site in Kenilworth into a public space have taken a step forward, with councillors set to discuss the project with county officers later this month.
Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) began exploring the scheme for the land around the recycling centre in June, with members saying it should be brought into wider use.
Councillors unanimously backed a motion to see if the land around Cherry Orchard could be put to some community benefit.
The green space - which is owned by Warwickshire County Council (WCC) - is currently private land, although it is informally used by local dog walkers.
And speaking at last night's KTC meeting, Cllr James Kennedy provided an update.
"I am pleased to say that we have agreed with the county council to have a meeting at the Cherry Orchard site to discuss its future," he said.
"What has also emerged is that the county council developed a management plan for the site in 2016 which I don't think anybody on this council was at all aware of - so that is good to know and a good basis."
The council leader said he expected the meeting to be with a member of Warwickshire County Council's legal team, as well as an ecology officer.
Speaking in June Cllr Kennedy said a number of residents in the area had already registered their interest in the project.
And while he said it would be a "complicated" process to get going, he said the project would be "for the benefit of the residents and for the wildlife".
Councillors said this could be the start of a number of projects to bring more green spaces into public use.
