The county council is looking to move forward with the next section of the much-delayed Kenilworth to Leamington cycleway (K2L).

A public consultation has been launched on plans to turn a near-kilometre length of footpath along A452 Kenilworth Road into a shared footpath and cycle path.

The stretch of road is from the junction with Sandy Lane to Gables Lodge.

"The existing facility is in a poor condition. Most of it has poor and deteriorated surfacing," a council report said.

"Also the back of this facility is covered by overgrown vegetation."

It added: "As the existing carriageway is a high speed road (40mph) and extremely busy, therefore cyclists don't feel safe riding on the carriageway.

"Similarly, on the other hand the existing footway on the eastern side does not have sufficient width to accommodate any cyclists."

The existing pavement is just 1.2 metres wide, so will need to be widened.

Drawings on the council website state this is section 1B of the K2L project and the new path would connect to what has already been built further down Kenilworth Road via a 470 metre-long path through The Kingsley School's playing fields. This land needs to be acquired first though.

Locals have until August 21 to feed back on this leg of the cycleway.

Construction of the very first phase in Leamington was completed in early 2024.

The county council approved the near-£5 million budget for the K2L scheme in 2020 before giving full approval for the 5km cycleway in January 2021.

Work on the project has previously been described as "glacial".
