Plans to build a 25-metre high 5G mast near Baginton have been revealed by mobile services company Cornerstone.

If approved the scheme will replace an existing 15 metre tower at Middlemarch Business Park next to Coventry Airport.

The new mast will support 18 antenna and four dishes to help provide local 5G coverage for Vodaphone.

Cornerstone also said the proposal would help improve 2G, 3G and 4G services in the area.

"An upgraded installation in this location will ensure that the latest high quality 5G service provision is provided for Vodafone as well as upgraded 2G, 3G and 4G services for Vodafone and Telefonica in and around this area of Coventry," a planning application said.

"The location enables the whole of the surrounding area to benefit from improved 5G network coverage for Vodafone and has been designed to be future proof, thus enabling other technologies to be deployed depending upon the demand required.

"As the shift in demand is expected for the foreseeable future and that as central Government considers digital communications to be a critical national infrastructure, the operator intends to support customers and local residents by ensuring as little disruption as possible.

"As 5G is to deliver new technology, so too the infrastructure required is different than that necessary to provide the previous generations of connectivity."

Cornerstone mans over 20,000 sites across the UK - the UK 4G and 5G industry is predicted to be worth £18.5billion by 2026.

The application added: "As 5G technology is deployed across the country more and more services will become available and our lifestyles, economy and even the way we commute will be transformed.

"Additional base stations and upgrades to existing ones will be needed to meet this demand and improve the quality of service."

The application will now be considered by Warwick District Council.
