Plans approved for Abbey Fields cycle path
By James Smith 1st May 2026
Councillors have signed off the plans for a new cycle path in Kenilworth's Abbey Fields.
Designs for the shared-use walking and cycle path through the town centre park were approved by Warwick District Council's (WDC) cabinet on 29 April.
The route will form part of National Cycle Network Route 52 and will need planning permission before it is built.
The path will run from Bridge Street to Borrowell Lane and new signage will be installed across Abbey Fields.
Cllr Hema Yellapragada, portfolio holder for decarbonisation, said: "This is great news for users of Abbey Fields, providing a shared path which will allow everyone who wants to use the park to travel across it.
"The design of the route puts safety first, with measures such as clear signage and layout intended to support safe, shared use by pedestrians and cyclists, particularly in busier areas of the park.
"As the scheme is now progressed through the necessary next stages, this will go a long way towards improving active travel links in Kenilworth, and easing the parking pressure in Abbey Fields by supporting priorities set out in local walking and cycling strategies."

Warwick District Council already has the funding in place for the path.
But an estimated £528,000 is needed to pay for crossings at either end of it.
Locals were asked for their views on various designs last year, with over 1,000 responses received.
WDC previously said it would take five months for planning permission to be granted.
It was hoped construction could start in summer 2026, but timings will also depend on when the new leisure centre is finished.
