Over 300 locals have signed a petition to stop Kenilworth's branch of Iceland from closing.

Petitioners say it is an "essential part of the community" and "not just a grocery shop".

Nub News reported on Wednesday (June 17) the Warwick Road shop is set to shut in September.

Iceland - which has not confirmed a reason for the closure - has said it is working to offer team members alternative positions elsewhere.

But Rowan Williams has launched the petition urging the company to reconsider the decision and the "profound impact" it will have on the town.

"Many of our townspeople, especially the elderly and those without access to transportation, depend heavily on this store for their daily needs," the petition said.

"The thought of its closure leaves many feeling uncertain about their future well-being and accessibility to affordable essential goods.

"Imagine not being able to pop down the street to pick up your groceries, or having to rely on infrequent public transportation just to buy food.

"This is the daunting reality that faces many Kenilworth residents if the Iceland store is closed.

"The staff at Iceland are always ready to lend a helping hand and provide a friendly face at the checkout and help customers when needed, with Dorrianne being invaluable in helping other local businesses in the fight against local crime.

"Allowing this store to close would isolate members of our community who rely on its proximity.

"We need to preserve this vital resource for the sake of maintaining the vibrancy and inclusivity of [Kenilworth]."

Iceland's Kenilworth branch will close on September 5.

The nearest Iceland stores outside the town are at Cannon Park and in Leamington Spa.

"We can confirm that our Kenilworth store is due to close on 5 September," an Iceland spokesperson told Nub News.

"We are currently in discussion with staff regarding suitable opportunities to relocate to alternative stores, wherever possible."
