A pedestrian died in a crash on the M42 last night, West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) has confirmed.

WMAS received a call from West Midlands Police reporting a serious collision involving a pedestrian on the southbound carriageway of the M42 between junctions 4 (Shirley) and 3a (M40) at 11.09pm last night (January 12).

An ambulance, paramedic officer, a specialist paramedic, a MERIT trauma team and a MARS doctor responded to the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "When ambulance staff arrived, they found emergency service colleagues providing basic life support to a male pedestrian in a critical condition after reportedly being involved in a collision with a vehicle.

"The team of ambulance staff quickly commenced advanced life support.

"Sadly despite everyone's best efforts nothing could be done to save the man, and he was confirmed deceased on scene a short time later."

The road was closed for several hours while emergency services attended the scene.
